Please note that 'Hulme Hall' is pronounced 'Hewm Hall' (or even 'YOOM Hall')
Welcome to the University of Manchester and Hulme Hall. We hope that your stay at Manchester University will be as enjoyable as possible and that you find the workshop useful and interesting. The following gives local information. The workshop technical programme is separate.
The workshop organisers are George Neisser and John Heaton. Please contact either for help or further information. They will be around on the Saturday and Sunday as well as during the workshop.
This will be the porter's lodge in the foyer at Hulme Hall. Please note that this office is manned 24 hours a day.
Registration will be held in the foyer of Hulme Hall and will begin at 08.30 on Monday 15th June. The registration desk will be manned all day.
Please wear workshop badges at all times.
The workshop will be held at Hulme Hall. This is a University of Manchester Hall of Residence. It is located about 2 miles south of the centre of the city and about half a mile from the main University of Manchester campus. It is about 15 minutes walk from the University and about 30/40 minutes walk from the city centre. A map is available on our web site.
Hulme Hall is about 25 minutes by taxi from the airport and about 10 minutes by taxi from various city centre railway stations.
If you are flying in you are advised to travel to Hulme Hall by taxi. It is possible to travel to the city centre by train or bus, but unless you know where you are going, we do not advise you to use this mode of transport.
When ordering a taxi ask for 'Hulme Hall' a University of Manchester hall of residence.

A limited number of car parking places will be available. Hulme Hall is situated off Wilmslow Road about half a mile or so south of the University campus. If approaching from the city centre, go past Manchester Royal Infirmary (on your left) and then look for the 'Jaguar Showroom' (on your left) and turn to the left immediately after the showroom, Hulme Hall is on the right along this road.
On arrival at Hulme Hall go to reception you will then be assigned a room. Unfortunately because of the high demand during the workshop week no ensuite rooms are available.
Please note that if you arrive on Saturday rooms will not be available until 5.00pm. You will however be able to check in and leave your luggage with the porter, thereby freeing you to do some sightseeing, visit a restaurant or the local hostelry. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Please also note that meals, apart from breakfast, will NOT be available at Hulme HAll on Saturday and Sunday. There are many excellent restaurants within a few minutes walking distance of Hulme Hall. Again we apologise for any inconvenience.
The refectory will be used for breakfasts and lunches and the exhibition.
Breakfast will be available every morning including Sunday and Monday from 07:30-09:30.
We do advise that presenters bring along a set of transparencies
An overhead projector will be available. A PC and projector system will be available for PowerPoint presentations.
*** We do however advise all paper presenters to bring a set of transpa rencies for display via the OHP in case of incompatibility or other problems.
The plenary sessions will be held in the main theatre. A seminar room is available for break-out and parallel sessions.
The exhibition by manufacturers and sponsors will be held in the refectory during the duration of the workshop.
This will be open every night till 23.00. On Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th June it will be open until 12.00 midnight.
Newspapers may be purchased on the main road.
Telephones are available at many points. In an emergency please contact the porter in the porter's lodge.
Data points are available in bedrooms. You should have indicated your requirement on the registration form.
A PC cluster of 6 PCs will be available in the Library. Instructions will be available at the workshop.
By Bus: almost all buses on the main road (Wilmslow Rd) will take you into the city centre. Please ask the Driver.
Walking: You can walk to the city centre in 20/30 minutes. Just follow the main road, (Wilmslow Rd) into the city.
Manchester is not short of of eating places. A comprehensive list is available from Hulme Hall and should have been included in your workshop bag.
If you turn left on to Wilmslow Road you will find within a few hundred yards numerous Indian restaurants. These are renowned in Manchester and well worth a visit if you have time.
You should have received a local guide in your workshop bag.
Personal safety and that of your property is your responsibility. If an accident or mishap should happen please contact either John Heaton, George Neisser or the porter's lodge at Hulme Hall.
Please do not walk alone after 23.00. You are also advised to be back at Hulme Hall before 23.30.
Please note Lunches and evening meals will not be provided on Saturday and Sunday. We apologise for this, however there are many fine restaurants within a few minutes walk of Hulme Hall.
Hulme Hall bar will be open every night.
Arrive at Manchester. Please note that you will not be allowed into your room until 17.00 on Saturday. We apologise for this, but it is unavoidable. There will be a secure room to leave your luggage, leaving you free to do a little sightseeing or visit the local hostelry. We hope this does not inconvenience you too much.
Evening meal will NOT be provided. Excellent restaurants are available several minutes walk from Hulme Hall. A list will be provided.
