Abstract
This talk should give at first a summary of the caching situation in Germany including most of the problems every mesh of caches had to learn about in the past. A short overview of the German Broadband Research Network is followed by the introduction of the German Caching Project. This project is founded by the Association for Promoting the German Research Network (DFN Association) and carried out by the Institute of Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (RVS) at the University of Hannover.
During the project, 10 caches will be installed at the central nodes in the German Broadband Research Network. Main goal of the project is to build up an uppermost level with these caches in the german cache hierarchy. Simultaneously, all the aspects on coordinating a national cache hierarchy has to be discussed with administrators of other caches.
In a second step, a local caching testbed will be set up at RVS. Main focus on this testbed is research on combining modern network technologies (such as ATM) with caches to improve performance. One aspect may be the use of permanent connections for transferring ICP pakets.
A detailed summary of the configuration of the caches will close the talk.
